Spill response kits are a convenient way to help ensure that adequate response materials are on hand. These kits can be positioned throughout a facility in spill-prone areas and stocked with absorbents, PPE and other tools that are likely to be used in that area.

For outdoor situations, there are a variety of spill kits that contain oil-only absorbents to absorb oil-based liquids while repelling water. For example, the PIG® Transformer Spill Kit is ideal for cleaning up large quantities of transformer oil leaks or spills outdoors. UV-resistant, the black, completely opaque polyethylene container, blocks sunlight from degrading both the contents and the container for up to 8,000 hours. The PIG® Transformer Spill Kit contains enough oil-only absorbent mats, pillows and booms to absorb up to 40 gallons of transformer oils on water or land. Personal protection equipment has also been included to help protect Spill Responders.

A well-stocked spill kit contains a variety of absorbents in sufficient quantities to handle the most likely spills that could occur. Some situations require one large, centrally-located kit while others may need to have multiple, small kits in each spill-prone area. Whichever choice is made, be sure that everyone knows where kits are stored, and that they are placed in a location or locations that can be accessed quickly and easily in the event of a spill.
