In the 1960s, Gilbert(R) pioneered the industrial use of insect light traps (primarily in the food and pharmaceutical industries) which increased fly control while promoting lower, more judicious use of pest control chemicals. These pioneering efforts were so successful that Gilbert(R) was awarded a registered trademark.

In the mid to late 1980s, Gilbert pioneered the use of energy saving LEDs in emergency EXIT signs, making this life saving equipment more reliable, raising awareness of the energy saving possibilities of LEDs within industry (NEMA), and kick-starting EPA's Energy Star program.
